Community Service
The Barnabas Centers are youth shelters and residential homes that are apart of the Salvation Army. They serve everyone in need, from youth to elder. Depending on what type of help you need their provided service time and place varies. Their services are very important and very much needed because there are many people that need help and guidance and they don't exactly know what to do or how to even help themselves.
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
During my community service, I interacted with the with the kids that came to the center. We watched movies, played board games and card games. I had to serve snack to the kids that wanted it and made sure that it was the right count for their records. I also had to handle money when kids bough stuff from their snack cabinet and kitchen. They also have these fake dollars called "Barnabas Bucks" that I had to laminate and cut out. The kids have to earn these bucks and eventually they will be able to spend them at the center's snack cabinet, prize shelf and kitchen.
I liked doing my community service hours at the Barnabas Center. I liked doing my hours there because I worked there during the summer and really enjoyed it. I like feeling like I made a difference in someone's life. Some of the kids added me on facebook, have my personal number and have even come and hung out with me. The kids yell my name and run and hug me as if they were children and I love it so much to know that I had some type of impact in these kids that at one point didn't even know me. I also like the fact that they want me to come back and work with them again. I would really love to one day and once i graduate from college a job like that is what I'm going for.
